The publication of the African Human Mobility Review (AHMR) Volume 9 for the first quarter of 2023 is now available online. The AHMR journal is jointly published and jointly owned by Scalabrini Institute for Human Mobility in Africa (SIHMA) and the University of the Western Cape (UWC).
AHMR is an interdisciplinary peer-reviewed on-line journal created to encourage and facilitate the study of all aspects (socio-economic, political, legislative and developmental) of human mobility in Africa. Through the publication of original research, policy discussions and evidence-based research papers, AHMR provides a comprehensive forum devoted exclusively to the analysis of contemporaneous trends, migration patterns and some of the most important migration-related issues. The journal is accessible on-line at no charge
The issue contains five articles and book review. The article titled, “Impact of Internal Migration on School Enrollment and Completion Rates in South Africa” by Farai Nyika and Debra Shepherd provides evidence that internal migrants have a positive effect on both school enrollment and completion rates of non-migrants.
Sean Sithole, in his article titled “Migrant Networks, Food Remittances, and Zimbabweans in Cape Town: A Social Media Perspective,” identifies the key evolving connections between migrant networking on social media and crossborder food remittances in Southern Africa.
“South Africa’s Counterinsurgency in Cabo Delgado: Examining the Role of Mozambican Migrants to Establish a PeopleCentric Approach” by Joseph Makanda offers a critical survey of the work done in the context of terrorism in Cabo Delgado.
“Who Wants to Go Where? Regional Variations in Emigration Intention in Nigeria” by Tunde Alabi and Bamidele Olajide investigates the factors associated with emigration intention using a logistic regression model.
“Mobility, Gender, and Experiences of Familyhood among Migrant Families in Tsholotsho, Zimbabwe” by Gracious Maviza and Lorena Núñez Carrasco explores the views, experiences, beliefs, and motivations of individuals on how ongoing contextual transformations due to migration actively shape narratives about families.
Daniel Tevera reviews the book Migration in Southern Africa edited by Pragna Rugunanan and Nomkhosi Xulu-Gama.
